CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

THE GROUP that met outside the hotel entrance at ten in the morning was washed out and sleep-deprived, a dim shadow of their vibrant, champagne-swilling selves.

Charlotte’s eyeliner was smudged and her stockings had a long tear along her right thigh. She squinted at Richard’s hair, and Liam imagined that the shock of red against the backdrop of gray, sleepy London had to be overpowering her hangover. Richard and Charlotte shared a cigarette and Bill Collins glowered his disapproval.

It was only four of them who waited by the curb for the driver to pull the car around. Darcy was returning room keys in the lobby. Each had, as of yet, successfully ignored the other’s existence. Liam buried his hands in his pockets. Richard blew a plume of smoke in his face.

It was a painfully long car ride, especially when the clouds knit together and rain began to tap against the windshield. Liam felt stiff. Charlotte sat next to him. She was resting her head against his shoulder, and he tried to ignore the wisps of blonde hair that tickled his neck.

Liam had his headphones in, and he had put on some track that was melancholy and introspective, just to match the weather. He couldn’t help but glance at Darcy in the passenger seat. The other man stared straight ahead, never looking around, his shoulders squared.

Liam swallowed and looked away.

“Your shoulder is bony,” Charlotte said quietly. She pivoted her face up to his, gray eyes regarding him through heavy lids. He smiled at her, and she smiled back. “You are a beautiful boy.”

“Are you still drunk?” he murmured. He fixed the edge of her coat, which was now being used as a blanket.

She burrowed her face into the crook of his neck and dozed off again. Liam was aware of Richard’s eyes on them, cool and perceptive.
